Contest - Cat Chow Volunteer of the Year [$25,000 Shelter Makeover]

Our very own Melody Larson does not even know she has been nominated yet, why????

Because she doesn't just volunteer for the cat shelter, she also volunteers every year for a two week medical mission in Ecuador where children with facial deformities get the life changing surgery they need to help them lead a more normal life. It isn't difficult to see why Melody was the obvious choice to represent us in this national contest. Melody's generosity doesn't end with animals, she volunteers for people too.

Don't forget to put your daily vote in for Melody Larson from Cats Cradle Shelter in the Cat Chow Volunteer of the Year Contest.

Help us win a $25,000 shelter makeover. Please SHARE!

Featured Cats - Amy & Joey

Amy and Joey are two cats that recently found their way to Cats Cradle Shelter.  Their lifelong owner and faithful companion recently passed away leaving behind these two sweet angels.  Right now they are living in room 7 at the shelter and have all of their comforts from home including their food, treats and cat stand.

Amy is quite uneasy about all the changes in her life and is often found hiding under the stand or tucked into a soft bed with her head burrowed into the side of the bed...or into her brother.  She is a round little girl and seems to be comfortable with head rubs and pets as long as you come visit her in her bed.

Joey comes out to meet new people and likes to sit so he is half on your lap and half on a chair.  He enjoys being petted and will push his nose into your hand for more love.  He is a little nervous about all the new noises at the shelter and people coming into his room, but will calm down and come for attention quickly.  He has an interesting tail…it curls backwards like a Husky.  Joey is taking good care of his sister and often returns to her bed for snuggles.

These sweet cats are eight years old and have always been together.  If you have room in your heart for these two please call the shelter to come and meet them.  I think they would bring great joy to your family and would certainly settle nicely into a loving home.

We are located at 9  9th Street South, Fargo.  Open House hours are Tuesdays 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm and Saturdays 12:00 pm - 5:30 pm.  You can also meet them by appointment by calling us at 701-356-7877.

Featured Volunteer - Julienne

Hi, I'm Julienne.  I am an Early Childhood Special Education teacher out in Casselton and have worked there for 20 years.  On Saturdays you will find me giving tours and taking pictures at Cats Cradle Shelter.  I help out with this blog as well. At home I have 4 cats.  Quinn was a rescue from Cats Cradle last November.  They are a wonderful part of my family and a joy to come home to each day.

5 Ways to Enjoy a Special Valentine’s Day with Your Cat

No one wants to spend Valentine's Day alone, including your cat. Valentine's Day is the perfect time to reflect on the importance of the relationship you share with your kitty and the love you share.

Show your kitty that Cupid made a good match when he linked your hearts. Below are ways to enjoy a special Valentine's Day with your furry sweetheart.

1. Snuggle on the couch. There's nothing your cat loves more than spending quality time with his favorite friend. Invite your kitty on your lap and enjoy some cuddles and TLC.

2. Give your cat a massage. Cats can get sore, stiff, and tense too. Strengthen your human-animal bond and bring relaxation to both your cat and yourself.

3. Bake some yummy, homemade treats for your cat. Healthy treats made with love make a great Valentine's gift for your kitty. Choose a PetPlace recipe, and surprise your cat by allowing him to snack on the ingredients while you cook, enjoy the aroma coming from the oven, and feast on the end result!

4. Turn off the TV. Tune into your cat rather than the latest reality show. Your cat knows when you are truly enjoying his companionship. Be goofy with him; play on the floor with him, get out some cat nip... Forget your inhibitions and have fun!

5. Make sure your cat has a good window. Cats love to look out the window and watch the street activities or nature activity. Make sure he has a window that is easily accessible with something interesting to watch. Consider buying him a window seat (a bed that attaches to your window frame) or place a chair or table next to the window with a bed that will allow him to enjoy the view. Your cat would also LOVE it if you bring more nature too them by adding a bird feeder. You can birdwatch with him and enjoy!

Your cat gives you unending love. He is there every day when you get home and is an important part of your life. Your cat is the perfect Valentine. Show him how much he means to you.
