Featured Cats - Still Available

These fantastic cats are still available and waiting for their forever homes.  Stop by CCS and meet them in person.  Open house hours are on Tuesdays from 4:00 - 7:00 Saturdays from 10:00 - 4:00 and by appointment.  You can reach us at 701-356-7877.
We are located at 9  9th Street South in Fargo.

Ripley - rescued 12/13/12
I’m Ripley, a black-and-white, front-declawed male.  I’ve had many challenges living outdoors and was quite sick when I was rescued by CATS Cradle Shelter.  I have become stronger and healthier with all the TLC.  Being on my own left me very wary of other cats so I don’t always play nice with other felines.  I have free reign of the shelter, but I would love to find my forever home.  I am not demanding of attention; I just require a soft cat bed, a few treats every now-and-then and a little love.  If you visit the shelter, be sure to say hello to me.  I will probably be in the kitchen (that is where they keep the coziest bed – just for me).

Clara - rescued 5/6/11
Hi, I’m Clara, a beautiful torti.  I found my forever home when I was a kitten.  Sadly, my forever guardian passed away; so I am back at CATS Cradle hoping to find a second chance at a forever home.  I am a dignified girl who doesn’t mind being held.  I enjoy sunbeams and watching out a window with a view.  I have gorgeous gold eyes and a very soft coat.  I get along with my roommates but would also be fine as an only pet.  Stop at the shelter and get to know me, perhaps I could be your forever friend.
Mike - rescued 12/7/11
Hi,  I’m Mike a 3 year old handsome boy.  I’m outgoing and love to play.  I’ve been known to do back flips while in pursuit of a toy.  I’d prefer a bed in a window so I can see what is going on outside.  I can’t wait to find my forever home where I’d get some one on one attention and many head rubs.

Stallone - rescued 7/15/11
I’m Stallone a handsome male black cat.  I’d love to greet you at the door when you come home and would appreciate some of your time petting and giving me all your attention.  I get along well with other cats here at the shelter and enjoy a soft bed in the window.  I’m ready to get into my own place where I can sit with my guardians and purr.  I’m so ready that I keep trying to escape my room when the door opens to see if my new family might be here to meet me.

Miley - rescued 8/11/12
I’m Miley, a black-and-white female cutie.  I prefer to get attention on the floor or in your lap as I’m a little unsure of being held up high.  Once you start giving me some love be sure to have extra time because I’ll follow you around for more and more attention.  I love having my head scratched and being petted.  I’d love to be your forever friend.

Georgia - rescued 10/10/12
Hi, I’m Georgia. I have a gorgeous long gray-and-white coat and I can be quite the diva.  I have a sassy personality and love to play.  My favorite toys are balls with bells inside that I can chase around the room.  When I am not busy playing, I like to have my head scratched.  I love to be on a cat-stand so that I can survey my territory.  I would love to find a forever home where I can be queen of my my castle.

Maren - rescued 10/12/12
Hi,  I'm Maren a female black and white cat.  If you look close I have a unique coat with individual white hairs throughout my black fur.  I'm a mild tempered girl that enjoys sitting on a lap or being petted while sitting in a cozy bed.  I'm not too fond of my feline friends, but will rub up against the people who come to take care of me.  I can't wait to find a home where I can relax and come out of my shell.  Come by to visit me and get to know me better.

Fundraising Event - "Rock to the Rescue"

CATS Cradle Shelter has been asked to partner with "Rock to the Rescue" on April 18th in Grand Forks, ND. RTTR was founded by the band STYX. Tommy Shaws daughter, Hannah is the Executive Director. We will be setting up a booth at the Styx concert and we will have volunteers selling raffle tickets to an autographed guitar. 25% of the proceeds will go to CATS Cradle and 75% will help fund Rock To The Rescue non-profit Grants. We are super excited to have been personally asked by Hannah Shaw to partner with them for this event.

Whiskers

You know cats have whiskers, but do you know why??  Here are 7 fun facts about cat whiskers.

1. Whiskers are exquisitely sensitive

Your cat’s whiskers are rooted much more deeply in her skin than her ordinary fur, and the area around them has a very generous supply of nerves and blood. This makes the whisker tips so sensitive that they can detect even the slightest change in the direction of a breeze. Because of that sensitivity, it can actually cause your cat pain if you mess with her whiskers. Eating out of a bowl that presses on your cat’s whiskers can also be disturbing, so consider feeding your cat on a plate or buying her a wide, flat feeding bowl.

2. They’re not just on the nose

In addition to the eight to 12 whiskers your cat has on either side of her nose, she also has shorter whiskers above her eyes, on her chin, and on the backs of her lower front legs.

3. They help her figure out where she’ll fit

The whiskers on your cat’s nose are generally about as long as your cat is wide, so they help her to figure out how wide an opening is and whether she’ll fit through it. Some people say that if cats gain weight, their whiskers get longer; I haven’t seen enough evidence to know whether this is true.

4. They help her position her prey

Cats are farsighted -- they can’t see well up close -- so when they catch their prey, whether that prey is a mouse or their favorite feather toy, they need some way to sense that their prey is in the proper position for the fatal bite. The whiskers on the back of your cat’s forelegs, and to a lesser extent, those on her chin and the sides of her nose, are crucial for that purpose.

5. They’re an emotional barometer

The position of your cat’s whiskers can be an indicator of her mood. If her whiskers are relaxed and sticking out sideways, she’s calm. If they’re pushed forward, that means she’s excited and alert. If they're flattened against her cheeks, she’s angry or scared. Of course, you’ll need to check her “whiskergram” against her other body language, such as the position of her ears and tail, to confirm what the whiskers are telling you.

6. They should never be cut

Although your cat does shed a couple of whiskers from time to time, you should never trim your cat’s whiskers. She’ll become disoriented and may begin acting dizzy and confused because she’s no longer receiving those vital navigation signals. Imagine if somebody grabbed you and put a blindfold on you and you couldn’t take it off for a few weeks -- that’s about what it’s like for a cat whose whiskers get cut off.

7. They can change color

Don’t be surprised if you find a white whisker growing in your pure black cat’s fur as she ages: Cats do start going gray with age, but it’s not noticeable unless your cat’s fur is a dark, solid color.

Featured Volunteer - Melody

Melody spends time with CCS cleaning and serving as an important foster family for many of the cats who for various reasons can't be at the shelter.  Melody has been successful with fostering many litters of kittens.  In 2012 she fostered a mother cat with a litter of 5 kittens with distemper and is no stranger to bottle feedings.  She has had many favorite cat moments as she fostered Zarah and Trinity after major medical surgeries and many kittens that needed extra care.  She worked with one cat that had wobbly kitten syndrome as was thrilled when a good home was found.  Melody has been with CCS since they first opened and enjoys working with all the cats and volunteers.  She lives with her husband and their 5 cats, Daffy, Wolly Girl, Pow, Becker and Jasper.  When she isn't busy at the shelter she enjoys sewing and running.  Based on the pictures she sent in I'm sure she gets in her fair share of running just keeping up with all her furry friends.  Thanks for all you do Melody!!

At the shelter the volunteers are crucial in keeping things running smoothly, taking excellent care of all the special cats, and supporting each other in the CCS mission.
