Featured Volunteer - Katie

At the shelter the volunteers are crucial in keeping things running smoothly, taking excellent care of all the special cats, and supporting each other in the CCS mission.

Here’s a little bit about Katie.

Katie helps clean at the shelter and fosters cats when needed.  Her favorite cat moment is getting love nips on the chin as the cat rubs his/her head on her neck - and then if the cat reaches up to gently set his/her paw on her cheek- there's nothing better! Frosty, one of the shelter cats who is now in his forever home, was the best cat for that and she hopes he's loving up his new owners that way!  Katie has a career as a Student Experience Coordinator with Sanford health.  When she isn’t hard  at work or at CCS she loves puzzles, reading and yoga.  In addition to her 3 dogs she has a husband named Vance, who is a very tolerant man where her animal obsessions are concerned.   Katie strongly supports the CCS mission and greatly admires and respects the directors who brought the shelter to life and keep it going each and every day with no monetary compensation. She considers herself lucky to be able to be a part of such fabulous organization!”

Thank you Katie, for your commitment to CCS and all furry friends.

Featured Cats - Blizzard and Stallone

Blizzard
Hey, Blizzard is here.  I’m a front declawed, all white male cat with two different colored eyes.  I can be sneaky at the shelter and love to escape out to the hall for a little exploring.  I like being up high on a shelf or cat stand, and as you can see I love to pose for the camera.
I’ll come over for some attention and a few head rubs if you have time.

 Stallone

I’m Stallone a handsome male black cat.  I’d love to greet you at the door when you come home and would appreciate some of your time petting and giving me all your attention.  I get along well with other cats here at the shelter and enjoy a soft bed in the window.  Like my friend Blizzard, I enjoy sneaking out to see if my forever family has arrived.

You can meet Blizzard and Stallone at the open house on Saturday from 10:00-4:00.

Featured Cat - Mike

Mike
Hi,  I’m Mike a 3 year old handsome boy.  I’m outgoing and love to play.  I’ve been known to do back flips while in pursuit of a toy.  I’d prefer a bed in a window so I can see what is going on outside.  I can’t wait to find my forever home where I’d get some one on one attention and many head rubs.  Come see me this Saturday at the CCS open house from 10:00-4:00.

The Tale of the Tail

-A quick shiver of the tip of the tail usually means your cat is mildly irritated. An all over shiver of the tail generally means they are happy and feeling frisky.

Georgia
-Watch your kitty swish her tail back and forth and you are seeing your cat at its most primal. When a cat in the wild is stalking prey, they will swish their tail back and forth so that the prey will move. This allows the cat to zero in and attack.  Your house kitty does the same thing when they are ready to pounce

-A side to side wave of the tail means a kitty is relaxed and ready to have some love and attention.

-A quick flipping motion may be a warning that they have had enough petting and want to be left alone.

-A kitty with their tail held high is often one of the healthiest signals a cat can show.  A happy and content cat will hold that tail high.

Toby
GI Joe
-A flipping tail while sleeping may mean your cat dreaming and more than likely chasing a bird or rabbit. This is one of the cutest things you can watch your cat do.

Featured Cats - Clara & Ripley

Clara

Hi, I’m Clara, a beautiful torti.  I found my forever home when I was a kitten.  Sadly, my forever guardian passed away; so I am back at CATS Cradle hoping to find a second chance at a forever home.  I am a dignified girl who doesn’t mind being held.  I enjoy sunbeams and watching out a window with a view.  I have gorgeous gold eyes and a very soft coat.  I get along with my roommates but would also be fine as an only pet.  Stop at the shelter and get to know me, perhaps I could be your forever friend.

Ripley

I’m Ripley, a black-and-white, front-declawed male.  I’ve had many challenges living outdoors and was quite sick when I was rescued by CATS Cradle Shelter.  I have become stronger and healthier with all the TLC.  Being on my own left me very wary of other cats so I don’t always play nice with other felines.  I have free reign of the shelter, but I would love to find my forever home.  I am not demanding of attention; I just require a soft cat bed, a few treats every now-and-then and a little love.  If you visit the shelter, be sure to say hello to me.  I will probably be in the kitchen (that is where they keep the coziest bed – just for me).

Fund Raising Event - Webinar

2/11/13 Webinar: Natural Cat Care Basics

Jen Springer spends some of her time at CATS Cradle Shelter doing cat massage. Outside the shelter walls, she is a licensed human massage therapist who has her own business and also teaches continuing ed courses for other massage and aromatherapists. She was introduced to the idea of using aromas and massage with animals by her own veterinarian and has continued to learn and develop her skills. Jen not only spends time with her own cats and the shelter cats, but she also works with canine and equine clients.

To support the shelter, Jen has offered to open up one of her webinars on natural cat care to our friends and fans. If you are interested in natural care, please consider signing up for the course. The registration fee of $9.97 goes directly to Cats Cradle Shelter.

Long-haired Cats

Looking for a long-haired cat?  We have several available.  Stop by the shelter to see them in person.

Batman - Laid back personality, likes to play.

Zarah - Calm personality, a very sweet girl.

Josephine - Possible Ragdoll mix, prefers to be the only cat.

Georgia - Sassy personality, loves toy balls with bells inside.

Rugby - Declawed x4, very sweet and loves attention.

Roberta - Loves people, would prefer to be an only cat.

Litter Box Issues?

Is your cat 'thinking outside the box'?

Most common reasons cats urinate outside the box:

1. The litter is dirty / not scooped often enough
2. Too few litter boxes (you need at least 1 box per cat)
3. The box is too small or they can't get into the box properly
4. Too much or not enough litter
5. The box is in a noisy location [e.g. laundry room] / doesn't allow for privacy or multiple escape routes
6. Doesn't like the type of litter being used
7. The box smells like cleaner (especially ammonia)
8. Stressors like moving, adding new animals or family members to the household
9. A conflict with another cat in the household
10. They feel sick [possible urinary infection, feline interstitial cystitis, bladder stones or blockage]

What you can try:

1. Have a vet rule out a health problem
2. Scoop the litter box at least once a day
3. Regularly clean the box with baking soda or unscented soap
4. Use clumping, unscented litter of a medium to fine texture
5. Move the litter box to a quiet, low-light location where your cat is able to see anyone approaching and can escape quickly
6. The litter box should be out of sight of their food and water dishes
7. If your cat is old or arthritic, use a litter box with low sides so she can get in and out easily
8. If you live in a multi-storey residence, place a box on each level

Featured Cats - Ace & Sweet Pea

ACE
I’m Ace, an adult male orange tabby.  Just have a seat and I’ll cuddle in close and lay at least half way on your lap.  I currently share a room with several female cats and get along well.  I guess I like being king of the castle.  I’m not too sure I’d like to share my princesses with another guy, but would probably be alright as the only royalty.  I’m a big guy that’s just right for a snuggle.  Come visit the shelter and meet me.

Sweet Pea
I’m Sweet Pea, an adult, female torti.  I love to play and sit beside you.  Give me some attention and I’ll keep coming back for more.  My people are important to me and I’ll follow you for a few extra loves if you get up to go.  I’m quite calm and have gotten along with my friends at the shelter.   If you come to visit be sure to check on me…I will probably be curled up inside a cozy bed waiting for my forever family.
