Toxic Outdoor Spring Plants

Although it may not look, or feel like it, Spring is on the way.  Here is another reason to keep your cat indoors.

There are numerous outdoor spring plants that are toxic to pets.  The entire plant is not always toxic.  Sometimes only the seeds, leaves, stems or roots are toxic.  If you determine that your pet actually did ingest an outdoor plant, call your veterinarian immediately.  Have the following information ready when you call: the type of plant, what portion of the plant and how much was ingested, how your pet is acting.  Get a sample of the plant if you are unsure of the name.  This information can help your veterinarian choose the best course of treatment.

Plants considered toxic and can result in GI upset:
  • Amaryllis
  • Caladium
  • Calla Lilly
  • Ferns
  • Hyacinth
