Black Cats - "Melanistic"

Black cats are "melanistic".

Melanism which is black or nearly black pigmentation (and is the opposite of albinism), is seen not only in domestic kitties, but also in 11 of 36 wild species of cats.  The trait is most prevalent in males.  Melanism produces yellow irises due to the high levels of melanin in the pigment of cats.

CCS has several black cats who are waiting for their forever homes.  Here are a few…

Askme - rescued March 2014
Askme is a bit reserved and will wait to be approached by visitors, rather than greeting them at the door.  She can usually be found cuddled up in a cozy bed.  She likes head-rubs and is patiently waiting for her forever home.

Skylynn - rescued February 2014
Skylynn loves a lap to sit in.  Just sit down, pat your leg, and here she comes!  She loves to cuddle but is not demanding of attention.  She gets along well with the other cats in her room.

Brewster - rescued June 2013
Brewster loves a window view; he likes to stretch up tall and check out the activity around the shelter.  He has a laid back personality and loves people.  Brewster has a gorgeous black coat speckled with individual white hairs throughout.
